of her neighbor friends. "Remember the Cano boy, Leno?" Maria questioned seriously. "The boy we used to see playing in his patio? The one who we would tease by throwing pebbles at and then hiding in the bushes. Remember how angry he would become because he could not find out who threw them?" "Yes, I remember." Her friend replied. "But I have not seen him for a very long time. Why, Maria, has something happened to him?" "No, nothing like that, my friend. He is working for my father now. He is no longer a little boy, however. I was just talking to him today about how we used to tease him but he did not remember it." As the two walked home they chuckled in their reminiscing at their cleaverness in that in all these years, he never knew who they were. The years to follow took Maria into her late teens with sufficient prosperity in material and personal fulfillment. She looked forward more and more to delivering the noon day meals to her father and in visiting with one worker in particular. The boy she had teased so many years before, requested of Senor Rodriguez Maria's hand in marriage. As was the custom, there would be a waiting period of three months in which Zeferino would consider Leno's request. Like all fathers, he wanted Maria to have the best and he must be sure that Leno would be a good provider. The three month period had passed but still he had not given his approval. One day, Manual, Maria's uncle, spoke to Zeferino on her behalf.. "Zeferino, you must decide on this marriage." Manual insisted. "Tomorrow Padre Lugardo Armento will be by for an answer What is it that holds you from making this decision? Leno is a fine man and a good worker, is he not? Already he has not taken kindly, and rightly so to your hesitation. Maria is beyond the normal age to marry. Are you waiting for Don Juan Tenerio or one of the sons of Don Luis Tercazas to gallop into Botija on a white horse and sweep Maria off of her feet and ride into the sunset? That will never happen. If you do not consent soon, Zeferino, I will on your behalf." "Yes Manual, you are right. I must let Maria go. I have no reason to believe that Leno will not make a good provider. I will go to Padre Armento and ask him to make the arrangements for the wedding." On May 31, 1922, Magdaleno Jose de Los Angeles Cano took Maria Louisa Monica Rodriguez in marriage in the church of Corazon de Jesus at the Hacienda de Pantoja where Pedro Mosquedo and Maria Garcia served as best man and matron of honor respectively. After a small gathering, the newly wedded went to live with Leno's parents, Rita and Prudenciano. Previous to the wedding, Leno had left Zeferino's employment to work for another in order to widen his experience. While Leno was off to his duties, Maria performed her duties under the roof of her in laws. After their first year of marriage, Maria learned that she was carrying her first child. On February 25, 1923, she gave life to a girl which they named Elena Juliana. Within two days, Fray Cajitano baptized her in the same church of 23.
