What we do

Interpreters are available, through the Department of Social Service, to assist those persons who have a limited knowledge of English or who have a hearing impairment. We realize that, even with a basic knowledge of English, at times it may be difficult to understand medical terminology or to express what you want to say. The interpreters are specially trained to assist you whenever you need to communicate with hospital personnel.

The interpreters also know how the hospital functions and can orient you to the new atmosphere. They are also aware of the importance of cultural traditions. The interpreters can provide you with foreign-language reading material and music tapes for your enjoyment.

You can use the interpreter services whenever you need to make an appointment, when you come for a consultation, when you are an inpatient, or any time when you need and services directly related to University Hospitals.

Interpreters are not trained to provide any medical care themselves, but they will gladly interpret for you whenever you come in contact with the many health professionals who are in charge of your medical care.

The interpreters will do everything they can to make your stay at The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics a pleasant one. Please call us whenever you return and require our services. Nuestra function

Los interpretes se encuentran en el Departamento de Servicio Social y estan listios para ayudar a aquellas personas que tienen un conocimiento limitado del idioma ingles o que tienen impedimentos auditivos. Nosotros sabemos que muchas veces, aunque tengamos un conocimiento basico del ingles, se nos hace dificil entender la terminologia medica o expresar lo que verdaderamente queremos decir. Los interpretes estan especialmente entrenados para asistir a los pacientes cuando necesiten comunicarse con el personal del hospital.

Los interpretes tambien conocen a fondo los reglamentos y estructura del hospital, lo que les permite orientar a los pacientes al nuevo ambiente. Al mismo tiempo, ello estan familiarizados con la importancia de las culturas y tradiciones. Los interpretes les pueden proporcionar libros y revistas en lenguas extranjeras, al igual que cintas musicales y otros materiales para su entretenimiento.

Usted puede utilizar los servicios de interpretacion cuando necesite hacer una cita, cuando venga a consulta, cuando sea paciente interno, o cuando necesite cualquier servicio directamente relacionado con los Hospitales y Clinicas de la Universidad.

Who we are

The interpreter staff consists of full-time and part-time interpreters. Both oral interpretation and written translation services are provided in approximately 26 languages.

All staff interpreters are fluent in languages, are aware of cultural traditions,a nd are familiar with medical terminology.

Due to the great number of patients served, it is impossible to assign a specific interpreter for each patient. You may receive the assistance of several different interpreters, depending on how long you remain in the hospital. Be assured that the quality of services is the same from each interpreter and that any information you give any interpreter will be treated as confidential.
