The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics Department of Social Services INTERPRETER SERVICE ADVISORY COMMITTEE EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE LIAISON: Greg Jensen DATE COMMITTEE ESTABLISHED: March 1, 1987 COMPOSITION: The Committee will consist of representatives from the Department of Social Service, the University of Iowa and community agencies, who have demonstrated interest and expertise in the provision of interpreter and translation services in a health care setting. Membership will be composed of nine persons. In addition to the Assistant Director of Social Service, who serves as chairperson of the Committee, the Assistant to the Hospital Director serving as administrative liaison for Social Service, the Administrative Assistant in Social Service, and a Hospital Interpreter, one member will be selected as a representative from each of the following groups: College of Nursing Department of Spanish and Portuguese Translation Laboratory Cooperative Education Southeast Asian Project Speech Pathology and Audiology Members of the Committee will serve for a designated term of appointment. The Committee is responsible for developing recommendations to the Executive Committee on length of Committee appointments and the method by which Committee membership will be rotated. GOALS: 1. To assist the Department of Social Service in the recruitment, identification and selection of potential hospital interpreters and translators. 2. To assist the Department of Social Service in the development of training opportunities for hospital interpreters and translators. 3. To provide consultation to the Interpreter Service regarding program development. 4. To assist the Department of Social Service in problem solving activities related to the Interpreting Service. 5. To identify and advise the Department of Social Service on the social and cultural issues that can affect patients'/families' utilization of health care resources.
