Haoyu Lu The University of Iowa Iowa City, Iowa 52242 The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics Department of Social Service (319) 356-2207 Psychiatric Hospital Social Service (319) 353-3670 If no answer, 356-1616 January 26, 1987 To: Language Bank Volunteers We want to share with you a change being made in the interpreter services at University Hospitals. As you may be aware, since 1975, University Hospitals has had two separate interpreter services: the Department of Social Service has coordinated interpreter services for Spanish-speaking patients; and the Volunteer Program Language Bank has provided interpreter services in other languages. Beginning February 1, 1987, these two interpreter programs will combine, and the Language Bank interpreter services will transfer to the Department of Social Service. The combined Interpreter and Translation Service will provide comprehensive language services for non-English speaking and hearing-impaired patients and families during clinic visits, hospital stays, or other communication with hospital staff. we hope that one combined program will enhance our ability to recruit, screen, the train hospital interpreters and to monitor the interpreting services provided. We have appreciated your involvement in the Language Bank, and we want you to know that your support has greatly contributed to the provision of language services at University Hospitals. Your continued interest, support, and involvement are critical to the success of the newly reorganized Interpreter and Translation Service. We will continue to be in contact with you in the coming months as proceedures are revised and organizational issues refined. At this time, we would like to introduce you to the current staff interpreters at University Hospitals: Ozzie Diaz-Duque, Mary Solis, and Nory Arango. We would also like you to meet the Social Service receptionists, Vickie Swanson and Debra Courtney. You may contact the Interpreter Service by telephone at 356-1967, or you may stop by our office at Room C-124 General Hospital. We are excited about the possibilities and benefits of the combined interpreter program. We appreciate your involvement and continued support, and we look forward to becoming acquainted with you. Very truly yours, Sue Dallam, Director Greg Jensen, Assistant Drector Volunteer Program Department of Social Service GJ: vs 27: VOLINTP. LET
