Title Hospital Interpreter - Spanish Grade 05 
Basic Function and Responsibility 
To provide effective communication for Spanish speaking patients, their family members and the hospital staff so that the well-being of the patient at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics is enhanced. To initiate, develop, and coordinate effective communications programs.
Characteristic Duties And Responsibilities 
1. Provide adequate translation of all procedures, of a medical and social service nature, for Spanish speaking patients, their families and the hospital staff.
2. Coordinate all activities and programs relating to interpreting for Spanish speaking patients at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.
3. Coordinate activities of the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics program on communication for Spanish speaking patients with other organizations and/or agencies.
4. Maintain records and other forms of documentation of all activities, for the purpose of identifying further needs and making recommendations that will result in better service to Spanish speaking people served at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.  
5. Provide educational programs for hospital staff members relating to Spanish speaking patients and their culture, their needs and problems.
6. Participate as a team member in conferences with other hospital personnel on behalf of Spanish speaking patients. 
7. Initiate and develop programs to enhance communication among Spanish speaking patients, their families and hospital personnel. 
8. Identify and make known medical and social needs of the patients to professional staff.
9. Develop and/or translate into Spanish written documents and brochures commonly used by patients and/or their families in University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.
10. Develop familiarity with administrative and patient policies, protocol and services of University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.
