Editor's Note: Part 1 of the series on the Mexican ethic group in Iowa City was in Last Saturday's Press Citizen. It carried interviews with the Magdaleno Cano and the John Gutierrez families. "We all piled into our Plymouth car in Temple, Texas, - Henry and I, and our nine children - and started for our new home in Iowa City. We were packed in like sardines, but that didn't matter, we were happy with our move. Oh yes, we also brought along our little dog, Pinto, who was just like a member of the family." It was Mrs. Henry Rios talking, as she and her husband recalled how they came to Iowa City in January 1948, 35 years ago. The Henry Rios family is the largest family in the Mexican American community in Iowa City, with a total of 12, 10 boys and two girls: Emmett, Helen, John, Mary, Frank, Tony, Tom, Ray and Roy (twins), Henry Jr., Ramon, and Ben. All 12 are married now with families of their own. Currently the Rios family, counting the 60 grand-children and 12 great-grandchildren, totals 101, with many living in the Iowa City, Coralville, North Liberty area. Mrs. Rios smilingly adds, "by 1984 we will be 105."
