Henry and Mrs. Rios were anxious that their children all have good educations, and all 12 graduated from high [school], and one son, Thomas, the football coach at Independence High School (first at Lone Tree) graduated from the University of Iowa. All of the Rios boys were good athletes and competed in many different sports. Mrs. Rios, with a bright sense of humor, comments, "I tell our children that I only had a third grade education in Texas, but I am the only one who can both read ad write Spanish and English, so that makes me the boss." Henry Smiles, and quips, "I can speak four languages, English, Spanish, Bohemian, and Swedish. I learned Bohemian working with many of them here at the city, and I learned Swedish in Texas where I worked with many of them. The Rios family arrived in Iowa City on a Saturday and stayed at first with Henry's mother and stepfather, the Jose Sanchezes. On Monday, Henry went to Cedar Rapids with John Gutierrez Jr., who thought Henry might get a job with him on the Rock Island. He was successful; and started work the next day.
