[...]the union called a strike after two months, and he was out of work. The middle of March Rios went down to Ralston Creek where Fred Gartzke, city engineer, had a temporary crew cleaning out the creek bed, and said to Gartzke, "How about a job?" "OK, get down there and go to work," Gartzke said. He adds, "He was the best man on the job and on April 1 I hired him full time." Rios remembers, "Preston Koser was mayor then, and the city was under the Mayor-City Council Plan: I have worked steady for the city since that day, 35 years ago, and have loved working for the taxpayer." Henry now operates the City's heavy equipment - plows, sweepers, road graders, etc. Shortly after arrival in Iowa City, Mrs. Rios answered a want ad in the Press-Citizen and went to work for Kelley Cleaners on Gilbert Street, where she continued for four years. She then worked for the university laundry for 25 years. She, too, is enthusiastic about Iowa City and greatly loves the city. The Rios live in their own home at 727 Rundell St., where they have lived for 11 years. Henry is 67; Mrs. Rios, 69. MR. AND MRS. JOE MARTINEZ Mr. and Mrs. Joe (Mary Cano) Martinez are a second generation in the Mexican American Community, and both have most interesting stores to tell in their own right. By way of background, the Martinezes were married in September 1953, and have three sons, all of whom are attending the University from time to time. Martinez works at the Veterans Hospital. He was born in Texas, and after his mother's death, he and his father moved to Chicago, where a married sister and her family lived. Martinez came to Iowa City for the first time in the 1940s as one of the so-called "fresh air kids," sponsored by the Mennonite churches of this area. As he re-[...]
