HOMILY
MASS OF THE RESURRECTION
MARIA CANO MARTINEZ

St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Iowa City, Iowa, August 31, 1983

Good morning! Buenos Días. There is a saying in Spanish that I would like to recall to begin this reflection on María’s life. It expresses so much: “TE ACOMPAÑO EN SU PESAR”. Freely translated it means: “I ACCOMPANY YOU IN YOUR SORROW-YOUR HEAVINESS”. So Joe, Joey, Mark, and Robert, y todos los queridos of the family and friends of María, on behalf of all the priests, deacons, friends, and co-workers we say: “LES ACOMPAÑOS EN SUS PESARES”. We accompany you today in your sadness and we ask the Lord’s peace.

For some time now we have all known of María’s cancer and we are not shocked at her death. However, death knows only its own time and it is never easy to acknowledge. The grief we feel is none the less. May we be with you and support one another. The scriptures today clearly speak to us of María’s life. They assure us that María is a “soul of the just and is in the hand of God”.

“UNA ALMA DE LOS JUSTOS EN LA MANO DE DIOS”.

One time a young priest while celebrating a funeral Mass during the homily time consoled the family and friends gathered by intimating that indeed the person whom everyone loved was with God in eternal reward. The pastor later in the sancristy challenged the young priest by saying that we cannot judge anyone’s righteousness or salvation. Well, dogmatically the pastor was correct. It is not ours to judge, nor to send anyone to any state of existence. Yet at the same time the word of God living and active do tell us that the soul of the just are in the hand of God and I say that if María Martínez is not with God then indeed we are confused in faith!

Not only are we confident of God’s gracious favor for María, but assuredly María’s presence before God is needed—indeed demanded. Who else but María could serve as the Kingdom of Heaven’s interpreter? As María knew every corner of the University of Iowa Hospital and every other person there—she certainly will not be lost in Heaven. And so it seems to me
