II. Homily: MARIA CANO MARTINEZ that as María is in the hands of God, she was for us also not just the interpreter of a language: in nouns, verbs, adjectives, but she was for us all the interpreter par excellence of God’s love. I told Bishop O’Keefe one time that if we could ordain women to the diaconate the very first candidate that I would ask would be María Martínez. María’s whole life was an interpretation of the true meaning of service. Maria served so well as: A WIFE to her Joe. So faithful and so much always in love. A MOTHER to Joe, Mark, and Robert. A DAUGHTER to Magdaleno and María. A SISTER to Elena, Josephine, Delores, Rosemary, Molly, Arthur, Robert, and Vincent… María always in the midst of so many things to do, so many people to see…always had a way of making your time with her a really quality time. ERA MUY SERVICIAL. She was a true servant. María’s time of service extended to: A TIME TO SING…A TIME TO PRAY…A TIME FOR HER CHURCH…A TIME TO LOVE…A TIME TO SAY GOOD-BYE…A TIME FOR HER ONE LAST TRIP TO MEXICO TO PRAY AND KNEEL BEFORE HER GOD AND TO BEG FOR THE PROTECTION OF LA VIRGEN DE GUADALUPE FOR HER LOVED ONES. Nobody was going to prevent María from doing that…or no illness. María also interpreted for us the gift of faith. She lived so profoundly and deeply her convictions of God’s presence. I used to love to go around the hospital with María to visit the Hispanic patients, María would say: “You know, Father some of the doctors and nurses and social workers really don’t understand. I don’t mean just the language barrier, but I mean the faith and trust of the people in God”. More than once Maríawould get herself in trouble because she would pray with the patients, console them, calm their fears with a loving touch of prayer. The last few months of her life were to so many of us an inspiration of faith. She never appeared afraid, if
