III. Homily: MARÍA CANO MARTÍNEZ

she was, her fears were calmed by God. One might claim that Maria’s faith was simplistic. Maria’s view of faith was the view of those she served. God was so real and loving to her patients and God could never be any less real to María in her own illness. Finally, María interpreted for us a deep and abiding love for her people…especially the poor, lonely, and afraid. For all of us the fear, the lonliness, the isolation that sickness causes is devastating. For those who cannot speak the language of the institution and society, for those who are so removed from their culture…ambiente…it is doubly painful.

Rising many times in the middle of the night she would come to sit, to hold: The hand of a pregnant teenage girl. Tell the family that their abuelo died. Seek to bring peace to fueding members of the familia. In all, María understood that our society is made of many beautiful people not the least of whom, growing in strength and numbers are brown and speak Spanish. María insisted that cultural and language diversity is a blessing from God and not a curse. María was an exceptional woman of our time. For all of us, María Martínez brought out the meaning of life…to serve…to walk humbly before one’s God…to seek growth in faith and to be committed to people…especially her family. María really spoke only one language…the language of love. María’s whole life was an interpretation of love.

Truly, the world will miss María.
Truly, we will miss María.
Truly, her family will miss María.

Pero…María you still speak to us: VIVAMOS SIEMPRE EN AMOR. We always live in love.
