did not lessen my enjoyment of the novelty of seeing the slant of the sun in the shuttered streets and hearing the town awaken. As I came through the "place" on my way to work I saw three old women gazing intently into the sky. Following their line of sight and the sound I made out six great aeroplanes flying in a flock high up - probably a bombing flight roaming homeward after paying an early morning call on Germany. When I had finished my work and got it off by courier at 8 o'clock I was still too early for my mess mates. So I downed my bread and chocolate
