now for several days I might conclude that it isn't so bad a war as it might be. Among other things I have done to-day I moved my Lares and Penates (I hope I have remembered how to spell them). Today the house we have been in became the Army Guest House. All officers in it moved out to leave the rooms available for guests. The government took over our mess, too, and will operate it charging us a flat rate of ten francs a day, which we are glad to get because we haven't been able to keep our costs down to that amount. I had the devil's own time finding a room. The billeting officer first sent me to a place that had been taken already by a French officer. Then he gave me a requisition for a room in a low-looking dump that I recognized at first
