downhearted perhaps. I have just received a brief note from Zim saying that he is being sent home to become assistant divisional intelligence officer of a unit in the States and to be there from three to six months. For him I am very glad. He has been with a division at the front since March and has seen some pretty lively service, particularly in the recent offensive north of the Marne. I know just about how he feels. But the news of his good luck impresses upon me the fact that I'm stuck for the duration of the war. I can't think of any reason under heaven that might take me back; I'm a GHQ officer, and there are no new GHQ's forming in the States. 'Stough when they send your good friends back and you have to realize that you can not expect anything similar in luck. Won't Arthur have a great time, though? He'll probably see enough new Doug Fairbanks shows to furnish material for talk throughout the rest of the war. And maybe he will get close enough to Macetta that they can get married! I am sorry his outfit is not near enough that I could see him before he leaves. I should like to send him off with a cheer to show him I don't begrudge him his good fortune even if I do envy him beyond measure. This has been a fairly lively day in spite of its promise at the beginning of being altogether dull. Mangan left
