142 16 August, 1918. Dear Daphne, I am sticking at my desk again tonight so that I shall not be obliged to go immediately to bed. The alerte has been sounded and I dare not let the light shine from the window of my room. Here I can hide behind the shutters. We had a little excitement last night over our usual alerte. As I have already told you, the boches had dropped a note saying that they intended to bomb our town on the night of the 15th.
