144 19 August, 1918 Dearest Beloved, -- Despite the alerte and the danger of avions I am in my little chamber tonight where I can be with you, and nobody else. I just told Charlie Mangan and Sergeant Beakey that I was going home to see my wife, smiling an ironical smile the while I said it. "Wouldn't you like to drive up and say "Hello, old dear," really and truly?" said Charlie. I said "Oh, boy!" It's the irony of fate that I can't do that, but it is delightful even to fancy such a thing. I have managed to cover my window enough that the police won't see my light, I guess, and certainly enough that no boche 20,000 feet in
