who used to laugh at people who talked of being in love, who advocated utilitarian marriages, who defied woman-kind to dent his hard and stony heart (zink! zoonk! zank! [music notes] the villain!). I have to be a little bit amazed now and then at everything that has happened. For I know certainly that I have fallen in love, but also that I have found a kind of love that is like a great religion. It has set me fast in understanding of great and holy things and given me more in a single respect to live for then I used to think there could be in life. And by that I don't mean to imply that I was down on life before, but instead that the wonder of being in love is vastly greater than I ever dreamed. It makes this funny world a great place. And it does things to the souls of men!
