candied sweet potatoes. It seems the French have no such dish, and Martine was appalled at the thought of serving anything with sugar in or upon it with meat. Well the dinner went along and our candied SP's didn't appear. Came dessert time with everybody waiting expectantly (we had two guests) and in marched the maid with the sweet potatoes in a fruit dish covered with a nice thick syrup - and cold! Martine had decided we must be crazy and had served our fruit as it ought to be served. We rebelled. Knowing what a desperate thing it is to refuse anything Martine offers and how sacrilegious to question French notions of cookery and service we nevertheless refused
