hear her? She is wonderfully brave and cheerful always. Aug 9th. I was unable to finish this Monday but will try to do so now. We are sending you the fruit cake which Mary made -- at least she was Commander in Chief of the kitchen brigade. It -- the cake -- is a wonderful and fearful affair and should be good, for the whole family had a hand in the making. If you are not a teetotaler get a half pint of rich old port wine or a good brandy and pour over it and let it stand for thirty six hours and you will have a cake fit for the gods or even a Yankee soldier boy. We are unable to get either wine or brandy here as Minnesota, Iowa
