live on public broadcasting stations a week ago Sunday. On Tuesday, he gave a lecture and recital at Colorado Springs College. He flies to Vienna on Dec. 6 to do King Philip in Verdi's "Don Carlo" for a week ; then he'll fly back for Dec.17 benefit at Hancher Auditorium in Iowa City. "im happy to do a University of Iowa benefit because I wouldn't be where I am today if it weren't for my teacher at the university," Estes says."Charles Kellis told me, 'You have a voice to sing opera,' and it's the first I thought of it. He's still my only singing teacher." Kellis now resides in New York City. Last weekend, Estes and poet Paul Engle each recieved the Distinguished Friend of the University Award before the footbll game in Iowa City. The award is one of the highest given by the University of Iowa Alumni Association.Estes also sang the Star Spangled Banner before the game. Estes has fond memories of his University of Iowa days, where he sang with the Old Gold Singers and was a member of the student council/ He worked a full-time job at Collins Radio in Cedar Rapids to put himself through school. College president Virgil Hancher let him charge for a concert "so I could raise money to go to New York." he recalls. And that trip in 1963 changed his life/ He had received a full scholarship to study at Julliard School of Music in New York City, a school which he considers "the most prestigious in the world and the most difficult to get into." He also received a Rockefeller Grant for living expenses and books. From there be became a professional singer with the German Opera House in West Berlin and still sings there. In 1967 he won third prize at the Tchaikovsky Vocal Contest in Moscow, Russia. Learning to speak in the languages he sings has come easily for Estes, who says he speaks German, Italian, Spanish and Russian. In July he greeted with "thunderous aclaim" for his performance in "The Flying Dutchman," which opened the Bayreuth Festival in West Germany. He performed with great conductors of this country -- like Leonard Bernstein and Zubin Mehta
