UI grad Simon Estes will open concert series Dec. 8 A singer whose path to national recognition led him from a small Iowa town to a White House performance will appear in the University of Iowa's 1971-72 Concert Series. Bass-baritone Simon Estes, the only male vocalist invited to perform at the opening of the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C. last week, will be here on Dec. 8. Estes is a former UI student and a native of Centerville. After winning a silver medal in the first Tehaikovsky International Vocal Contest in 1966, he performed with other contest winners at the White House for President Johnson. The Concert Series will open on Oct. 6 with the Mitchell-Ruff Duo. Their presentation is a multi-media panorama of the birth and development of Afro-American music, with films, slides, and tape recordings accompanying the performance. The Pittsburgh Symphony will appear Nov. 16, and the New York Pro Musica. 10 musicians who provide an excursion into the musical past, and are scheduled for Feb. 11. Closing the series on March 15 will be Christopher Parkening, already at 23 acclaimed as America's first virtuoso of the classical guitar. All performances are scheduled for 8 p.m. in the Main Lounge of the Union. Tickets for the performances will be sold at the box office at the Union, with reserved seat tickets priced at $4 for the Pittsburgh Symphony. $3 for the Pro Musica, and $2.50 for the other three concerts. Reserved seat tickets will be available to the university community two weeks prior to each concert, and to the public one week before each event. UI students may purchase reserved seat tickets for 50 cents each or obtain general admission tickets free, both with the presentation of identification cards and current certificates of registration. Box office hours are from 11 a.a. until 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.
