[[Photo caption]] Simon Estes [[end caption]] Simon Estes Proud of Hometown Centerville A young bass singer who has carried the name of Centerville, Ia., to the East Coast and throughout Europe, will return to his hometown Tuesday, May 17, to sing a concert at the High School Auditorium at 8:00. In a letter to Mrs. Dean Green, president of the Ensemble Music Club, which is sponsoring his appearance here, Estes said, "It will be wonderful to come again and to see the town where I was born and where I first started singing. I am very proud to be from Centerville, Ia., and from the United States." Born in Centerville in 1938, Simon was the youngest of four children. He came through Central Ward School by way of Edith King, Ethel De Noon, Louise Carter, Audrey Bartle, Zelma Benda, Vernice Stagner, and Mary Hanes. Don Gunderson directed his vocal training during high school. Simon received the Music Citation Award in 1953-34 and again in 1954-55. He graduated in 1956 receiving letters in basketball, football, and track. Besides his mother, Mrs. Ruth Estes, now living in Des Moines, Simon has two sisters, Westestella Tompkins of Cedar Rapids and Erdean Crosswhite of Des Moines. He is the nephew of Mr. and Mrs. Okie Estes of Centerville. His father, Simon Ester Sr. is deceased.
