Simon Estes Takes Second in Contest in Moscow, Russia Moscow, Russia -- Simon Estes, Des Moines basso, who thrilled his large audience at a concert a month ago in his hometown, Sunday took second place in the Tchaikovsky International Music Contest. The audience at the Sunday finals shouted "bravo" and "first prize, first prize," when Estes sang his last round of arias. Estes won special favor for his rendering in Russian of an aria from Tchaikovsky's opera "Eugen Onegin." Studied at U. of I. He studied music at the University of Iowa at Iowa City and the Julliard School in New York. He has sung with the Berlin and Rome Opera Companies and is under contract to the State Opera Theater in Luebeck, Germany. Each finalist has to sing three arias -- one by Tchaikovsky and two of his own choice. Estes is the son of Mrs. Ruth Estes, 2502 Woodland avenue in Des Moines. He was reared in Centerville, where he was graduated from high school, and later attended the University of Iowa, Iowa City. He calls Des Moines his home town. They were Barbara Rondelli, 27, of Pittsburgh, Kan.; Simon Estes, 28, of Des Moines and New York; Veronica Tyler, 29, Baltimore, Md., and Jane Marsh, 24, Boston. The final round begins today and lasts until Sunday. Seven of the other finalists are from the Soviet Union, two from Romania and one from Bulgaria. Each finalist has to sing three arias -- one by Tchaikovsky and two of his own choice. Estes is the son of Mrs. Ruth Estes, 2502 Woodland ave., Des Moines.
