Simon Estes, Noted Concert Artist, Returns to Des Moines; Will Sing Here May, 26 Simon Estes, celebrated concert artist, who formerly lived in Iowa receiving his college education at the University of Iowa, returned to Des Moines recently to visit his mother, Mrs. Ruth Estes, 2718 Woodland. He will be presented in concert on Thursday, May 26 at 8 p.m. at Corinthian Baptist church. This week he sat down and recalled the many outstanding events that have happened to him since he left Iowa. "After leaving Iowa and the State University of Iowa in September 1963, I dedicated my time explicitly to the profession of music. I went to New York City and auditioned for the Juilliard School of Music and was accepted there as a full scholarship student. While attending Juilliard, I participated in the Juilliard Opera Theater singing leading bass roles in opera and opera scenes. I studied interpretation of German Lieder, Art Songs and opera under the excellent auspices of the late Serguis Kagen. I also participated in the Juilliard production of Leonard Berstein's musical "On the town." "While in New York, I was the recipient of grants from the Three Martha Baird Rockefellers, Metropolitan Opera, William Mattheus Sullivan, Institute of International Education and the Juilliard School of Music. [[photo caption]]ESTES[[end caption]] "In December of 1964, while still attending the Juilliard School of Music, I was requested to come to Germany to audition for German Opera houses. The New York Community Trust Fund and the NAACP sponsored my expenses to travel to Germany and audition. My first opera audition was for the Deutche Oper (National German Opera House) in West Berlin and I was accepted. I then returned to the states and continued my vocal study privately with Charles Kellis with whom I still study. I also studied with Mr. Kellis while attending the University of Iowa.
