"Simon Estes will Headline symphony year" Renowned violinist to appear march 4-6 Ani Kavafian, recognized as one of the world's finest violinists, will be soloist March 4, 5 and 6 with the Tri-City Symphony Orchestra. Friday and Saturday concerts are 8:30 p.m. at Centennial Hall, Augustana College, Rock Island, Sunday's concert is 2 p.m. at Davenport Masonic Temple. The orchestra will open the program with Handel's "Royal Fireworks Overture," followed by American composer Daniel Perlongo's "Variations for Small Orchestra," a work composed in 1942. Miss Kavafian joins the orchestra before intermission with Prokofiev's "Concerto No. 2 in G minor." Brahms "Symphony No. 4" is programmed after intermission. Individual tickets for the concert are available at the box office at prices ranging from $6 to $12.50. "Student rush" tickets at $3.50 available to full-time students 15 minutes before curtain. Free shuttle bus service is available on Sunday from locations in Bettendorf, Moline, Rock Island, and downtown Davenport. Miss Kavafian, 35, plays a $250,000 Stradivarius violin created in 1736 -- a year considered the violin-maker's "golden period." She says of her famous Stradivarius violin, "It has a gorgeous sound; it's very mellow, yet macho, in its projection." To borrow money to purchase her famous violin, she took it along with her to banks to play for them "so they'd know I was a serious artist." Winner of the prestigious Avery Fisher award in 1976, Miss Kavafian made her first solo recording in 1978: "Ani Kavafian Plays Fritz Kreisler." She was born in Istanbul, Turkey, and began piano lessons at the age of 4, taking up the violin at 9. The violinist received a master's degree from Juilliard School in New York, with top honors.
