OM 100-4095 [[strikethrough]] CONFIDENTIAL held on January 11, 1948 at the Flamingo Room of the Hotel Ft. Des Moines in Des Moines, Iowa. [[redacted]] also advised that the subject in January 1948, as Secretary-Treasurer of the Des Moines Branch of the Communist Part, had arranged for a meeting to be held at the Crocker Branch of the YMCA, Des Moines, Iowa, in order to raise funds for the defense of [redacted] who in October 1947 had been convicted at Glenwood, Iowa for Tumultuous and Violent Assembly. [[redacted]] indicated that this meeting was not held. [[redacted]] stated, however, that on March 13, 1948, a meeting was held at the Crocker Branch of the YMCA to raise funds for the defense of ROSA LEE INGRAM, negress, and her two sons, upon whom the death sentence had been imposed by the Schley County Jury in Georgia. [[redacted]] advised that the subject made arrangements for this meeting and most of the other members of the Communist Party in Des Moines, Iowa were present at this meeting. [[redacted]] further stated that on the night of [[redacted]] of the Des Moines Branch of the Communist Part was held at the home of [[redacted]] advised that during th first week of [[redacted]] the Des Moines Branch of the Communist Party held a meeting at the home of [redacted] Des Moines, Iowa. (U) According to [[redacted]] EDNA GRIFFIN sponsored the meeting, the purpose of which was to discuss the membership in the Des Moines Iowa branch. At this meeting the subject instigated the dismissal of [[redacted]] from the Des Moines Branch of the Communist Party because he returned to work during a strike at the Iowa Packing Company at Des Moines, Iowa before the striking members of the United Packing Workers of America - CIO had agreed to return. b2 b7C b7D (U) On October 7, 1948, according to an article in the "Des Moines Register & Tribune", Des Moines, Iowa, MAURICE KATZ, Manager of the Katz Drug Store, Des Moines, Iowa, was found guilty of violating the Iowa Civil Rights Law in that he had refused counter service on July 7, 1948 to the subject, JOHN EUGENE BIBBS and LEONARD HUDSON, all negroes. The subject testified that she, BIBBS and HUDSON picketed the store with Progressive -4-
