Confidential Informant [ ] of known reliability, advised on February 4, 1949, that the subject renewed her subscription to the Daily Worker. Handwriting specimens of the subject were secured from Confidential Informant [] of known reliability, and photostatic copies of said specimens are being forwarded to the Bureau as enclosures with this report. b2 b7D A letter addressed to ELIZABETH GURLEY FLYNN, Communist Party USA, New York City, sent by the subject and her husband has been secured from [ ] and is also being forwarded to the Bureau as a handwriting specimen. In the July 4, 1949, evening edition of the Des Moines Tribune, in the editorial section, a letter from the subject to the editor was published. This letter defended the ideals of PAUL ROBESON and criticized the Des Moines Tribune for publishing an article which indicated that ROBESON was rather stupid for falling in with the Communist Party policy in his desire to better the position of the negroes in the United States. This article has been included in the case file in instant matter. [ ] advises that the Des Moines Branch of the Communist Party- USA, District Number 32 has been inactive of recent date and that subject has not been in contact with the known members of the Party in Des Moines, Iowa. b2 b7D In view of this information this case is being placed in a pending inactive status. One photostatic copy of subject's handwriting is being retained in the Omaha case file. ENCLOSURES: To Bureau - Photostatic copy of subject's handwriting and hand printing.
