OM 100-4095 ADMINISTRATIVE DRA Informant stated that [blank box] was one of those who met Mrs. BASS at the Airport and it was apparent from her conversation that [blank box] knew Mrs. BASS and one [blank box] [blank box] who accompanied Mrs. BASS on her trip. b7C On the night of July 19, 1952, WILLIAM SMITH arrived from Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and the Progressive Party held a meeting in the Hotel Plaza. EDNA was present as well as Mrs. BASS. The meeting was apparently ever who should run Cedar Rapids, Iowa would run for Governor. EDNA GRIFFIN and [blank box] went to Cedar Rapids, Iowa, later to talk to the wife of BILL SMITH and other members of his family about the possibility of SMITH running for Governor on the Progressive Party ticket. b7C It will be noted thathe did not run for this office in the November election. They were in Cedar Rapids, Iowa on either July 20 or July 21, 1952. EDNA, during the visit of Mrs. BASS, told the Informant that she thought Mrs. BASS was not emphasizing peace enough. Also, that everybody thought Progressive Party was Negro Party. On the night of July 21, 1952, the Informant picked Mrs. BASS up in his automobile and took her to EDNA's where they watched the Democratic Convention over television and EDNA settled up her debts with the Assistant Campaign Manager. On July 18. 1952. EDNA GRIFFIN had also called and [blank box] to see if they could get [blank box] a job in the Packinghouse in Des Moines, Iowa. Informant has advised that [blank box] are definitely sympathetic to the Communist cause. According to the Informant, OTTO ANSTROM was also atthe home of EDNA GRIFFIN on July 18, 1952, and told them that he had been in Chicago over the 4th of July and had been at the Palmer House in Chicago to meet another fellow. On July 27, 1952, Informant learned that there was to have been a meeting of the Communist Party in Des Moines, Iowa, but that a telephone call from Chicago had cancelled the meeting.
