OM 100-4095 [ ] stated that about a week before Christmas, 1952, EDNA GRIFFIN used the services of [ ] to appear before Local #7, UPWA-CIO, Bookey Packing Company, Des Moines, Iowa where a plea was made for funds to be used for the defense of the [ ] boys who had been indicted for murder in the state of Georgia. [ ] stated he did not know the circumstances of the [ ] case, but believed it involved two Negro boys. He stated GRIFFIN indicated that Local #7 had contributed the sum of $50.00 to aid their defense. b2 b7C b7D [ ] advised that about December 1, 1953 [ ] chief steward, Local #7, UPWA-CIO, had discussed having a meeting for the purpose of pushing a Fair Employment Practices Commission and having the same enacted as an ordinance by the City of Des Moines. He stated that [ ] is a member of the Anti-Discrimination Committee of the UPWA-CIO. He advised that [ ] is endeavoring to organize a community-wide program to put over the FEPC program. [ ] of known reliability, advised [ ] is a member of the Communist Party, USA. [ ] stated that on January 6, 1954, subject visited the home of [ ] Des Moines. He stated he did not know the nature of the contact . b2 b7C b7D [handwritten] IOWA [ ] stated that on the night previously subject had contacted [ ] in regard to a play that [ ] was writing. He stated the subject matter concerned social problems with a racial discrimination angle. [ ] stated that around November 1, 1953, the Arthur Murray Dance Studio, 504 Seventh Street, Des Moines, Iowa, had obtained a list of graduates of the Still College of Osteopathy in Des Moines. He advised that through that list, all graduates of Still College were circularized soliciting them to attend and take dancing lessons. The letter also requested that the recipient come and bring a friend. [ ] stated that EDNA GRIFFIN and her husband, Doctor STANLEY GRIFFIN made arrangements to attend the dancing studio and take lessons. [ ] stated that on November 20, 1953 STANLEY GRIFFIN and EDNA GRIFFIN, [ ] appeared at the studio. [ ] stated the management refused to allow them to enter to take the lesson stating they did not allow Negroes to take dancing lessons except at a special class held on Saturday evenings. He stated subject argued about the discrimination but they all finally left. He stated the next day GRIFFIN and [ ] went to see Assistant County Attorney GLANTON about this being a matter of racial discrimination b2 b7C b7D -2-
