City of Des Moines [seal] CITY OF DES MOINES SEAL IOWA PROCLAMATION WHEREAS, WE ALL KNOW ABOUT ROSA PARKS, THE 42-YEAR OLD BLACK WOMAN, WHO, IN 1955 BOARDED A BUS IN MONTGOMERY, ALABAMA, SAT IN THE MIDDLE SECTION INSTEAD OF THE BACK OF THE BUS, REFUSED HER SEAT TO A WHITE MAN, AND RODE INTO THE HISTORY OF CIVIL RIGHTS MOVEMENT BY THE STANCE SHE TOOK; AND WHEREAS, NOT AS WIDELY KNOWN IS THE FACT THAT IN JULY OGF 1948, RIGHT HERE IN DOWNTOWN DES MOINES, A 38-YEAR OLD, BLACK SCHOOLTEACHER NAMED EDNA GRIFFI, ENTERED THE KATZ DRUG STORE WHICH USED TO BE ON THE CORNER OF 7TH AND LOCUST, SAT AT THE LUNCH COUNTER, ORDERED A SODA AND WHEN REFUSED SERVICE BECAUSE BLACKS WERE NOT SERVED IN DOWNTOWN RESTAURANTS, BEGAN THE SIX-WEEK PROCESS OF THE PROTESTING, SIT-INS, A LAWSUIT AND A COURT CASE WHERE SHE WON THE RIGHT FOR BLACKS TO BE SERVED IN DOWNTOWN RESTAURANTS. FOR THE VIOLATION OF THE CIVIL RIGHTS LAW, MRS. GRIFFIN WAS AWARDED $1 IN A CIVIL SUIT; AND, WHEREAS, AFTER FORTY YEARS URBAN DREAMS' FIRST ANNUAL COMMUNITY TRAILBLAZER AWARD IS PRESENTED TO MRS. EDNA GRIFFIN FOR HER COMMITMENT TO THE CIVIL RIGHTS MOVEMENT IN OUR COMMUNITY. NOW, THEREFORE, I, PRESTON A. DANIELS, MAYOR OF THE CITY OF DES MOINES, IOWA, DO HEREBY PROCLAIM FRIDAY, MAY 15, 1998, AS: MRS. EDNA GRIFFIN DAY AND EXTEND TO HER A A TOKEN OF OUR COMMUNITY'S ESTEEN, A KEY TO THE CITY OF DES MOINES.
