In the East part of Buxton lived L. C. Carey (Ablack man of 35) that raised English Bull Dogs for a hobby and on the hill side by the coal shoot was Shelton Erricson a swede man of 25 or more that raised toy bull dogs or the smaller breed of bull dogs. L. C. Careys English Bull dogs were more dangerous for they could kill another dog in the matter of a few minutes and all of these dogs were killers and why they would walk those dogs down in our part of town without a leash I will never know unless they enjoyed seeing other dogs suffer or die. My Bird dog weighed 80 or 90 pounds and was two years old. he was a constant predatory target so far as these dogs were concerned. One or the other made for my dogs throat every time. Over the summer the bull dogs tried to kill my bird dog four times and each time they were twisted loose. when a bull dog gets a throat holt he sets his jaws and teeth until the other dog is dead; but the owner always carry a short piece of broom stick about eight inches long and then with the ring in the dog's collar he places this broom stick through the ring in the collar and starts twisting as in a tournique that shuts off the oxygen and the dog falls off unconscious. I threaten to shoot the dogs off if they did not keep them on a leash but very little attention grown men are going to give a kid with a dog. Afew weeks later Shelton Erricson brought his dog down by the livery stable as I was emerging from the black smith shop and this dog made for my bird dog immediently; but this time Spot was ready for him and met him as he lunged forward and threw him to the ground with his two big front legs and grabbed him by the throat and would not turn him loose; at last they had taught my bird dog how to defend himself. It was not easy prying them loose with all of the bull dog's neck in Spots big mouth. After that I had no more trouble. 
Jim Brooks and Molly Douglas had been good friends all of their 25 years and now they are in some kind of confrontation about something that could not be settled by arbitration, they had been real clost to trading punches with each other so Mollie says to Jim "Boy, we have been friends for so long I would not think of striking you" and Jim says to Mollie " I know good and dam well you would not think of striking me". and right here Mollie lost his temper and hit Jim right in the mouth. The fellows seperated them and perhaps they will remain as friendly enemys. When I was 8 or 9 years old I saw Bob Blakey pass east of our house dozens of times with his girl friend; Kate Carter and he still courted her for 20 years and then they decided to get married; they did and live together only three days; but a couple years later this same Jim Brooks married Kate Carter and they lived together for years until he demised.
