Purpose of the transit instrument The transit instrument is one of the most important of astronomical instruments. It is used principally for observing the transit of a star across the meridian of a place. The instrument is used in connection with a time-keeper and the chief object of the observations is to determine the error of the timekeeper and get the correct local time. Description of the portable Transit instrument The instrument consists of a small astronomical telescope mounted perpendicular to a light hollow axis. The telescope may be elevated to any angle by turning it on its axis. and the axis is placed east and west so that the telescope will swing in the meridian plane. The cylindrical extremities of the axis are the pivots. They are made of cast steel and are as nearly equal in size as is possible. 135122
