Setting the telescope There are two verniers accompanying the "setting" circle and when the telescope is horizontal the verniers read zero, the circle being graduated from 0 to 90 in each quadrant. In computing the "setting",h,of a star Having computed the "setting",h,of a star where transit, we wish to observe,the axis clamp and circle clamp being loosened, take hold of the telescope with the left hand and the circle clamp with the right and move the circle until the vernier indicate nearly the required reading.Then clamp the circle and finish the adjustment with the alidade tangent screw. Then bring the alidade level bubble approximately into the center of the tube by moving the telescope and tapping it with the finger to make the final adjustment. Clamp the axis slightly, nor so tight that it won't give if the telescope should receive an accidental knock, and when the star appears bring it between....
