Meridian Mark. When the transit instrument has once been brought to the meridian and the direction of the meridian line has been determined, a distant meridian mark should be placed, either to the north or south, for verification in case the instrument should be disturbed. In this case the azimuth adjustment consists in placing the middle vertical wire on the mark, or turning off, by the azimuth screw, the known distance of the mark from the meridian line. The mark should be placed at such a distance as not to be affected by parallax, yet not too far to be distinctly seen.
