Albert Gallatin represents the many foreign born men who have played an important part in our nation's history. Because of his foreign birth and brief citizenship his eligibility to a seat in the senate became a matter of dispute. He was born in Switzerland in 1761, came to America in 1780 and took the oath of allegiance and citizenship in 1785. Upon his election to the senate in 1793 the nine years' citizenship required by the constitution had not been attained. Mr. Gallatin suggested this to the caucus which nominated him.
