He acted, he said, under the direct orders of Washington who believed that a summary example must be made to stop the desertions that were daily increasing; He had executed but one while three had been captured, and that one was an American. 1 At the expiration of his term, he was defeated by Jeremiah Causden. Two years later both received the same number of votes in the fall elections. The state legislature drew lots and the choice fell to Causden.
