143 Benton refused to comply and at once appealed to the state and used all his influence to elect a state legislature which should support him. Neither faction was able to get a majority. The whigs and pro-slavery democrats finally united and Mr. Benton was defeated. In 1852 he was elected to the house, He retained the same interest in the slavery question and made one of his best speeches against the Kansas-Nebraska bill. He ridiculed Douglas' idea of squatter sovereignty declaring that congress had already settled the slave question over every foot of territory. 1 Mr. Benton spent two years in the house but was defeated for the second term. A third candidate was nominated in Mr. Benton's district who drew off enough votes from Benton to allow the pro slavery 1. Roosevelt. - Thomas hart Benton p 31.0
