In 1831 John McKinley was defeated for re-election by Gabriel Moore - governor of the state from 1829 to 31 1. Until 1831 there was but one political party in Alabama - the democratic. The northern counties broke away and made a formidable opposition Reports in 1833 came in that ten counties had voted against the administration, 2 and that the representation in congress would be divided. Two weeks later a letter to H. Niles announced the election of Mr McKinley to the house and four other Jackson democrats, and that a banquet was to be given to which the old hero.
