156 and those that were considered the strongest men in each party were brought forward. 13 whigs 1 and 11 democrats represented Pennsylvania in the lower house in congress. 2 Mr Wilkins took his seat Dec 4, 1843 but on Jan 13, 1844 he resigned to become secretary of war under President Tyler. After Mr. Wilkins term as secretary of war had expired, he returned to his home in Pittsburg, and practiced law and at the age of 76 was elected to the state senate. 3 Charles M. Conrad of Louisiana succeeded Alexander Monton to the senate. He served on the committee of land claims. He took little part in the national questions though unimportant remarks are 1.
