166 extending certain land grants into Iowa and Minnesota. In building the Southern Pacific Railroad, congress had appropriated 7,800000 acres of land to the undertaking. Wilkinson, in the senate, urged that an equal amount be given the Northern Pacific road. In the house, he advocated government control of railroads as a possible relief from the monopolies which were robbing Minnesota alone of at least $4,000,000 annually and Iowa and Wisconsin proportionally. 1 As an alternative to government control of railroads he favored granting lands to various companies, thereby encouraging competition. 2 After serving one term in the house Mr. Wilkinson was elected to the state legislature for four years.
