[Nyctea?] [nyctea?] [1?] The Snowy Owl was taken as a type of solitary species. Being but [imperftly?] and irregularly migratory this factor may be disregarded in studying the individual variation. it is widely distributed in [illegible] regions, extending in north America, at least in [illegible], to the Middle States. The specimens studied [illegible] from the states of Iowa, Nebraska, and South Dakota. The birds [illegible] all taken during the winter months thus proving them to be [matured?]. The range of time from Dec. to Apr. during [several?] seasons [illegible] to some extent the seasonal variation in plumage. The difference in size and coloration between the [illegible] must also be [borne?] in mind. A marked individual variation of coloration also exists as may be seen by a glance at the specimens taken on the same day from the same locality, e.g. [members?] 1.15, and 38. (first series of tables two of the fifty specimens (no's 25 and 44) [illegible] snow white. The following table is self explanatory, it gives the extremes of variation of the parts the [illegible], the amount of variation in inches and the percent of variation, the last two being always taken with reference to the mean measurements.
