11 Colinus virginianus (L). The common Quail or Bob White was studied as a type of a gregarious species nonmigratory in its habits. This well known game bird has a wide distribution being found from New England to Texas. A Texas variety is also recognised, varying considerably in coloration and also said to be smaller but my own observation hardly substantiates this, the fourteen birds are not enough to decide from. Those marked with an interrogation are from the boundary zone between the two varieties and combine the characters of both, there are eight of these unidentified seventy two are of the common variety and fourteen the Texan variety. The birds were obtained from the states of Iowa, Nebraska, Texas and the Indian Territory. The var. Texanna was taken in the vicinity of the Neuces River, Texas, they have an added measurement in the table--that of the width of the rufous bar across the throat. In the dotted diagrams the imperfect record of seventeen debars them from the diagram of length. In all the remaining diagrams one hundred specimens are represented. The tendency is in general toward a large foot and bill, the other parts remain constant this is shown by the diagram on the right of the following page
