The specimens studied were from the states of Iowa Nebraska and Texas the greater past bring taken of Wood [name?] and [name?] in Central Nebraska. As an example of the advantage of studying a large series of skins it will be noticed that [wheres?] in the diagrams, variation is evident it is so uniformly manifest that it is evident by not fortuitous or [illegible] to error of measurement. Thirty four or 6.8% of the five hundred had a distinct yellow wash upon [breast?]. in some cases this was accompanied by a similar coloration of the cheek [patelus?]. Five of these were deep yellow or [illegible]. In equal number of both sexes are [illegible], so that it is not a sexual variation. They were from different localities but all killed Oct or Nov. Both large and small birds exhibit the same characteristic. Five of [them have the cheek patch divided nearly all have it mottled.] The theory is advanced that the color may be [derived?] from certain algae? with which the parts affected may come in contact in certain districts. This appears extremely [improbable?] from the fact that the [illegible] appears
