The Lower Carboniferous or Mississippian series is composed of four stages; only three of which are exposed in Iowa. The first of these, beginning with the lowermost, is the Kinderhook which follows the Devonian system. The Augusta is next in the series. Above this appears the Saint Louis which is the last member of this series in Iowa. After the Saint Louis was laid down, the sea receded from what is now our fair state, leaving the exposed surface of the Lower Carboniferous to the mercy of the agents of erosion. As a result great ravines and gorges were hollowed out of the Saint Louis limestone. While this was going on in this region, the Kaskaskia stage of the Lower Carboniferous was laid down in the
