The time during which the Saint Louis stage formed dry land was an extremely long period, which may be shown by the much eroded surface which it presented for the deposition of the state of the Upper Carboniferous. The Kinderhook stage is exposed in the lower part of the bluff at Burlington; where it is composed of (1) a heavy shale, (2) sandstone, (3) oolitic limestone.
