mains present a large rough appearance with bold, rugged ornamentation and many of the structural details are exaggerated. By observation it has been learned that the exaggeration of structure fortells important biologic changes in the particular species in which these changes take place. So it was with the crinoids. "Pride goeth before destruction and a haughty spirit before a fall" Their extravagant growth indicated a point of maximum development and the approach of their decline. But, "they builded better than they knew." The strata containing their remains record an important chapter in geological history. Their remains have given us a rock which, wherever found may be recognized
