12. its. Chiefly, however, it is composed of brecciated limestone graduating upward into evenly bedded limestone which in places is capped by a deposit of chalky marl. South of the Missouri river it is made up of evenly bedded limestone with occasional exposures of oölite. In Van Buren county, Iowa then are there phases of the Saint Louis. (1) Brown arenaceo-magnesian lime-stone. (2) Brecciated limestone (3) Grey compact granular limestone. The brecciated portion of the Saint Louis is made up of fine grained limestone having a conchoidal fracture; the fragments are angular, and vary in size from a few inches to several feet.
