[page]38[/page]. to be cleared up, thin beds of coal are occasionally found in the midst unexpected places, in the midst of strata which undoubtedly belong to the Missouri stage. This is accounted for by movements of the earth's crust. While the Missouri stage was forming at such a place, the sea bottom was elevated until marshy conditions obtained. In these marshes the luxuriant growths of the coal plants found root, and in no great time, geologically considered, the marsh was filled with a mass of vegetable matter. After this the marsh was again depressed until the sea was again deep enough for the deposition of calcareous deposits over the vegetable mass which eventually became a seam of coal.
