[page]69.[/page] [underlined][underlined][underlined][underlined]BRACHIOPODA.[/underlined][/underlined][/underlined][/underlined] Molluscoidea with two, unequal, equilateral valves. Animal attached during part or all of its life by means of a pedicle at the posterior part of the body; or cemented ventrally. Valves ventral and dorsal. In composition the shells may be made up up [?] of calcium carbonate or phosphate or a mixture of the two. The shell is lined by an expansion of the integument called the mantle, which secretes the shell. Within the visceral chamber, attached to the dorsal valve, on either side of the mouth are two, rather long cirrated, spirally coiled brachia. In some genera these are attached to a calcareous base, while in other the calcareous support extends theroughout the brachia.
