In this class of the Mollusks the mantle is divided into two lobes each of which secretes a shelly covering, the animal is, therefore, more or less enclosed in a bivalve shell. The valves are right and left, not ventral and dorsal as in the Brachiopoda. The head is not in this case distinctly differentiated. There are one or two pairs of lamellar gills on each side of the body. The sexes are distinct or united.
